 Full condition / Pre-purchase

Full condition or pre-purchase survey is by far the most common marine survey and it is the one of the most detailed and
in depth inspection. The objective of this type of survey is to ascertain the structural integrity of the vessel and assess the condition of all equipment and systems on board. To ensure full evaluation the main requirement is to inspect the vessel in three phases: in water inspection, out of water inspection and sea trial.
As ‘eyes and ears’ of the client we are offering full expertise and total reliance on our surveyor.
The following list is an example of non-exhaustive list of the main areas that are inspected through this kind of survey:

• General condition survey appraisal

Often called ‘walk through’ survey. The objective of this kind of survey is to give a general overview of the vessel. Only obvious defects are identified; only easily accessible areas will be investigated and this type of survey is usually done when the vessel is in the water.
It is usually performed to select one out of a number of yachts when looking at purchase and heading towards a final decision or more information is required in order to make an offer.
The survey report will be much less detailed than pre-purchase report, but it is important to emphasize that all key areas and defects would be covered.

• Insurance

Survey for the insurance is a periodical inspection to enable insurer to have clear understanding of the asset that is being insured. Insurance Surveys are performed at the request of insurance companies to determine the overall condition of a yacht.
The primary function of an insurance survey is to ascertain the structural integrity, core systems and general safety of the vessel. For the owners this kind of survey is often regarded as a vessel’s ‘health check’. Typical survey is carried out of the water and it is not focused on the minor defects. Some insurance companies may want to know fair market value of the vessel which has to be agreed prior to survey.

• Valuation

This kind of survey can be a part of pre-purchase, insurance or stand-alone survey. Yacht Survey Adriatic LLC carries out these types of surveys for insurance companies and finance companies/ banks/ lending institutions. These organizations could have specific requirements for the survey so they should be consulted beforehand. We use advanced valuation methodology and through market research to ascertain a value of a specific yacht.

In special cases, we can perform a value assessment without physically visit the yacht. It is assumed that the yacht is in good working condition and is evaluated as such. The good working condition implies that the boat is structurally, navigable and systemically capable of sailing within the limits of the boat certificates issued by the responsible authority.

 Damage assessment

Collision, impact damage, grounding, flooding, fire (...) are incidents which may need to be assessed by surveyor. The extent of damage needs to be carefully evaluated to determine economic value of the repair.
We determine cause, nature and extent of damage and offering evaluation, supervision and documentation for the remedial work. It can’t be stressed enough importance of engagement professional surveyor in case of damage. Even apparently minor impact damage can have effect on the structural integrity in more distant areas. That kind of damage defects are called ‘hidden impact defects’ and problem may arise weeks or months after the incident.
Various parties may have interest in the consequences of the damage, and it is important to emphasize that Yacht Survey Adriatic LLC is not an accident investigator and does not determine the guilt of the parties in the proceedings.

 Limited scope

  • Hull survey

Yacht Survey Adriatic LLC also offers an inspection of the vessel's structure. There are two main areas covered in Hull condition survey: 

  • Fundamental condition of the material of which the hull and superstructure is constructed

  • Inspection of load bearing areas such as bulkheads, stringers, deck-hull connection, keel and engine bearers

The survey is carried through visual inspection and for GRP vessels it can include moisture readings where possible. It is important that the interior areas are clear of obstructions and unnecessary equipment prior the inspection.

  • Sea trial

  • Performance - Maximum sustainable power/speed achieved from the propulsion system

  • Economy - Fuel calculations to determine the maximum range of the vessel (optional)

  • Control - Ascertain whether the vessel can maintain a straight course and heading as well as turn, accelerate, decelerate, stop and maneuver at low speed

  • Functionality - The systems of the vessel are checked in service to confirm that they operate satisfactorily. It includes all systems of the vessel.

Sea Trial is the unification of all functions of the vessel in one test. It is essential that a certified crew is provided for the trial, that there is sufficient fuel on board and that there are no legal obstacles to utilize vessel for navigation.

  • Osmosis and moisture level inspection

Osmosis in GRP vessels is caused by moisture permeating through the gelcoat into the laminate mass, which then breaks down laminating materials to liberate acidic and/or hygroscopic compounds. These in turn encourage further moisture ingress, and ultimately cause blistering due to hydraulic pressure, and by causing swelling and deformation of the laminate.

Osmotic blistering can range from small pinhead blisters to swollen areas as big as the palm of a hand, the size being somewhat dependent on the condition of the underlying laminate.

To fully understand osmosis appearance there are number of factors which surveyor has to be aware of. Those factors include understanding of:

  • What materials within the
    laminate become hydrolised?

  • What are Contributory Factors?

  • Physical Manifestation

  • Contents and estimate
    amount of blistering

Moisture level is measured with ‘Skipper 5’ marine moisture detection instrument that uses the latest in electronic technology to take non-destructive moisture readings in GRP. Photographs of readings are taken, visualised and Geo-tagged to yacht location.

It is important to emphasize that treatment of osmosis is a very contentious issue and needs to be approached with great care.

After inspection and full assessment of the affected area we will recommend the level of treatment and remedial action along with an estimated cost of repair.
